Q

What did you pack for this journey?

A

I actually wrote a blog post about it here.

Q

What did you think you would pay for the apartment [in Saigon]? — John B.

A

This question follows on from the blog post I did about my apartment in Saigon, where I said I was paying US$650/month, and that it was more than I thought I would pay. I guess I’d always heard that Asia was so very cheap, and I figured I’d be paying maybe US$300-400? I don’t know what I was thinking, actually. $650 is still a good deal in one of the world’s major cities, no doubt, and it’s 8th floor with a view and tons of light, so I consider myself very fortunate to be living here at a price that certainly beats anything I’d have back in LA!

Q

How or where do you cook rice? Does every family have a dedicated rice cooker? — John B.

A

Good question, given that rice is served with EVERY MEAL in Southeast Asia — or at least it seems like it! If not in grain form, then in noodle form! But no, there is no rice cooker in my apartment in Vietnam. The kitchen furnishings are VERY sparse. Just a hotplate and a kettle for making hot water. That’s it. I could buy a rice cooker, but I don’t eat that much of it so it’s not worth it. I would guess that most families do have one, though, or at least bamboo steamers or some other way of cooking it since it is so integral to the cuisine.
