Eating My Way Through the Pearl of the Orient

Hong Kong: dim sum edition! (And dem sum. Sorry.) Hope you’re not hungry. I’ve been eating Chinese food my whole life… or so I thought until I landed in this city. A return visit is required if for no other reason than to chow down on char siu, roast goose, and congee.


Wish I’d had more time to explore some of the natural beauty that’s just on the edge of the metropolis. But giant cities thrill me, and this was no exception. It really reminded me — more than Tokyo or Bangkok — of New York City. The buzz, the pace, the towers, the lights.


Oh yeah — and the expense. Holy cow.


This short trip marked passport stamp #16 in 20 months (although Hong Kong doesn’t actually stamp your passport, they give you a small ticket). Closing in on two years abroad. Hard to believe.

Dim sum. I’ve had it in the states (esp in Los Angeles) — but this was the real deal. Soup dumplings, meatballs, pork buns, and shrimp shumai. -Hong Kong

I do not understand this trend. But if you want more fidget spinners, I know where you can get some really colorful ones. -Hong Kong

Congee. My first-ever bowl. A revelation. Savoury rice porridge — almost like grits — with slices of beef and meatballs with ginger and green onion in soy. -Hong Kong

Leaving bread dough out to rise on the street, and then cutting it right there. Baked goods are everywhere in HK. -Hong Kong

Been drinking this for 30 years (almost) — fun to have it in its home country. -Hong Kong

Hello Kitty jewelry at a high-end store… some of it going for more than US$3,000. -Hong Kong
